Coffee-to-Water Ratio Calculator
Choose a brew method and the amount of coffee you want to make. The calculator gives you a practical starting dose, water amount, grind direction, and brew-time range.
Build Your Starting Recipe
This is a starting point, not a rule. If the cup tastes weak, use slightly more coffee or a finer grind. If it tastes harsh or drying, use slightly less coffee or a coarser grind. Change one variable at a time.
How the Ratio Works
A 1:16 ratio means one gram of coffee for every 16 grams of water. Because one milliliter of water weighs approximately one gram, weighing your water keeps the recipe repeatable without making the process complicated.
| Method | Starting ratio | Useful adjustment |
|---|---|---|
| Drip or pour-over | 1:16 | Move toward 1:15 for more body or 1:17 for a lighter cup. |
| French press | 1:15 | Keep the grind coarse and steep about four minutes before adjusting dose. |
| Cold brew concentrate | 1:8 | Dilute after brewing; use a longer ratio such as 1:12 for ready-to-drink cold brew. |
| Espresso-style | 1:2 | Treat the output beverage weight, not reservoir water, as the second number. |
Choose Coffee That Fits the Method
Ratio controls concentration, but roast preference still shapes the cup. If you are choosing between brighter, balanced, deeper, blended, or decaf profiles, use Roast Match before buying.
