The ratio changes concentration, not quality by itself. If the cup is muddy, fix grind and pressing technique before adding less coffee.
Four-Minute Starting Sequence
- Preheat. Warm the press and cup, then discard the preheating water.
- Add coffee. Use the calculated dose and a coarse, even grind.
- Add water. Wet all grounds evenly and stir gently only as needed.
- Steep. Start with four minutes and keep the lid in place.
- Press slowly. Use steady pressure without forcing the filter.
- Serve immediately. Pour the full brew so it does not continue extracting in the press.
Common French Press Corrections

|---|---|---|
| Weak or watery | Use a fuller ratio such as 1:14 or 1:15 | Grind and four-minute steep |
| Sharp or thin | Try a slightly finer grind | Dose and water amount |
| Bitter or drying | Try a slightly coarser grind | Ratio and water amount |
| Muddy or silty | Use a coarser, more even grind and press gently | Dose and steep time |
| Good flavor but too strong | Move from 1:15 toward 1:16 | Grind and steep time |
